Parents often tell me, “I’m frightened of saying the wrong thing.” The good news is that children don’t need perfect words, they need calm, connected adults.
So instead of saying, “There’s nothing to worry about,” try: “I can see this feels really worrying for you.”
Instead of, “Be brave” try: “We’ll do this together, one step at a time.”
Instead of, “Calm down,” try: “I’m here. Let’s help your body feel safe.”
Children don’t need us to remove every anxious feeling. They need us to show them that anxious feelings are manageable. When children feel understood, their nervous system begins to settle and that’s when learning, confidence and resilience become possible.
Your words of understanding and encouragement become the bridge between fear and courage. Over time, your child begins to use those same compassionate words with themselves. Your words become their internal language; the way they speak to themselves.
What Can You Do Next?
- Focus on listening before fixing – pause and tune into what your child’s behaviour is trying to communicate.
- Name your child’s feelings without judgement – “I can see you’re feeling really frustrated right now. I’m here, you’re not on your own..”
- Keep your voice slow and calm.
- Practice coping phrases together when everyone is relaxed.
What Next?
During my Empowering Parent Programme, we’ll work together to understand your child’s unique needs, reduce the daily battles, build their emotional resilience and give you practical tools that actually fit your family. Most importantly, I’ll help you reconnect with your confidence as a parent because you know your child better than anyone.
