This is one of the questions parents ask me most. “Am I making things worse?”
Parents worry that comforting their child reinforces anxiety. Others worry they’re pushing too hard. The truth is, there isn’t a perfect script. Children need both compassion and confidence.
Too much protection can unintentionally teach them that, “You can’t cope.” Whilst too much pressure can communicate that, “Your feelings don’t matter.” As is often the case, there’s a balance to be found somewhere in the middle.
Imagine standing beside your child rather than carrying them or pushing them from behind. You acknowledge their fear. You believe in their ability. You stay calm. You take one step together. Children borrow confidence from the adults around them. If we panic, they panic. If we remain calm, even when they’re distressed, they gradually learn that difficult feelings can pass.
This doesn’t happen overnight. Confidence grows gradually through hundreds of small supported brave steps.
What Can You Do Next?
- Replace rescuing with coaching – instead of going into automatic ‘fixing’ mode, pause and ask what can I help my child learn?
- Praise courage rather than outcomes – notice their small acts of bravery and celebrate them.
- Keep your own emotions regulated where possible – you’re only human but try to remember children do what we do rather than what we say.
- Allow manageable challenges instead of avoiding everything – these will help your child build inner self trust and confidence.
- Remember that progress is rarely linear – we’re all humans here not robots.
What Next?
During my Empowering Parent Programme, we’ll work together to understand your child’s unique needs, reduce the daily battles, build their emotional resilience and give you practical tools that actually fit your family. Most importantly, I’ll help you reconnect with your confidence as a parent because you know your child better than anyone.
