In the story of The Wizard of Oz everything changes the moment the curtain is pulled back.
The powerful, intimidating figure everyone feared is revealed to be something entirely different. The illusion can no longer survive once the truth is seen. Relationships can feel the same. There may come a point where the excuses stop making sense and contradictions become impossible to ignore. Your gut is telling you something feels ‘off’ and you realise that the behaviour that once confused you actually has a pattern.
Suddenly, you see the relationship through a completely different lens. Once you’ve seen behind the curtain, three responses are particularly common:
Denial
You may hear: “You’re imagining things.” “You’re overthinking.” “That’s not what happened.”
When the narrative you’ve accepted, be it for months or years, begins to unravel, your partner usually attempts to restore the old version of reality. But the clarity you now have has a way of changing everything. You cannot unknow what you now understand.
Anger
When someone realises they can no longer influence your perception they can feel frustrated. You may witness them becoming defensive, critical or hostile. Your new found reality threatens the status quo they’ve worked so hard to maintain. Consequently, your new boundaries may be labelled unreasonable and your questions may be interpreted as attacks. Please remember: someone else’s discomfort with accountability doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong, misinterpreted anything or you should start second-guessing yourself.
Charm and Persuasion
Just when you’re certain of your decision, the person you fell in love with seems to suddenly reappear. The warmth, humour, fun, attentiveness, the promises of change, transformations and fresh starts.
Now this can be incredibly confusing to the mind that’s trying to process the new found reality, then is being presented with what you experienced at the beginning, what you fell in love with because it reignites hope.
You start thinking: ‘I should give it another try’, ‘We’ve been through so much,’ ‘Maybe this time will be different. ’’He seems to really meant it this time.’
Before you make any decisions, ask yourself whether you’ve seen this cycle before: Has change really been sustained or has it only appeared when you’re one step away from leaving?
Seeing the truth doesn’t always bring immediate peace. In fact, it often brings grief. The grief of recognising that what you hoped for and what actually exists are not the same. Yet clarity is a gift. It allows you to make decisions based on reality rather than potential.
It invites you to trust yourself again. Just like Dorothy, you’ve discovered that the answers you were searching for weren’t hidden in someone else’s power.
They were within you all along. You have your power. You don’t have to hand over your voice, your intuition or your worth to maintain the illusion. Once you’ve seen behind the curtain, you can’t unsee it and now the invitation is to walk forward with courage, grounded in truth and guided by the wisdom you’ve earned through experience.
Get Started
Trust your observations: You don’t need anyone else’s permission to acknowledge what you’ve experienced.
Stop debating reality: Once you’ve recognised a pattern, be careful not to spend months trying to convince someone else that it exists. You know what you’ve experienced and witnessed. Your energy is better spent deciding what you want to do with that information.
Strengthen your boundaries: Ask yourself: “What am I no longer willing to tolerate?” Then begin acting accordingly.
Focus on your future rather than proving your point and raking over every past detail: Many women become trapped trying to get validation from the very person who has repeatedly dismissed them. Often that person has their own version of events and you have to accept that and leave them to it. Your healing doesn’t depend on them agreeing with you. It depends on you trusting yourself and believing your own truth.. The truth may be painful but it is also liberating. Once you’ve seen behind the curtain, you can stop investing your energy in maintaining an illusion and start building a life grounded in reality.
